Do you need Cosmetic Dentistry ? (August, 2007)

Cosmetic Dentistry is a very commonly discussed topic today. We all are talking about it but how do we know if we need a smile makeover?

Analyse Your Smile
You can analyse your smile yourself to know if you need Cosmetic dentistry.

All you have to do is:-

Stand in front of a full length mirror in a brightly lit room. Now smile normally

  • Do you love the way your teeth look and the way you smile?
  • Are there any spaces between your teeth?
  • Do you have any missing teeth?
  • Do you have crooked or malpositioned teeth?
  • Are any of the teeth shorter than the others?
  • Are your gums very prominent when you smile?
  • Do you have any old silver fillings in your teeth?
  • Does the colour of any tooth not match the others?
  • Are your teeth stained due to any tobacco habits?
  • When being photographed, do you smile normally or is your smile restricted?
  • Do you feel shy in smiling in front of Strangers?

If for any of the above questions your answer is YES, you need Cosmetic Dentistry.

Ways by which the smile is improved:

Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening otherwise called bleaching is a very common cosmetic dental procedure done today. This involves removal of any stains on the teeth caused due trauma or tobacco habits. It is done with the help of a custom made tray and a bleaching agent. The bleaching agent is loaded on the tray and worn inside the mouth after brushing for 45 minutes. This procedure is repeated for 2 – 3 days to achieve the desired results.

Dental Bonding: This procedure involves reshaping the tooth with the help of a composite material. This material is bonded to the enamel of your tooth and can be shaped to acquire the required anatomy and colour. It is an in office procedure and can be finished in a single appointment.

It is relatively inexpensive compared to other cosmetic procedures, but it has a disadvantage of getting stained over a period of time.

Veneers:
Veneers or Laminates are thin layers of porcelain made of appropriate colour and size. They are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. This procedure involves two appointments. The teeth are prepared in the first appointment and the measurement is taken. The veneers are custom made to fit your tooth size in the lab. The second appointment involves cementing the veneer onto the tooth with the help of appropriate cement.

The results achieved are substantial. It involves very minimal tooth preparation as only the front surface is involved. They look lifelike and do not get stained. They are quite expensive compared to dental bonding.

All Porcelain Crowns:
All Porcelain crowns provide the same cosmetic change like the veneers. They cover the entire tooth whereas the veneers involve only the front side of the tooth. Crowns are considered stronger than veneers as they involve the entire tooth. This procedure is also done in two appointments.

The results obtained are everlasting. Crowns neither get stained nor get debonded from the tooth.

So why wait to feel good about yourself? Analyse your smile and ask for Cosmetic Dentistry!
